St Louis Cemetery No 1

Tour guide was great, knew his stuff good sense of humour.

Tomb it may concern- ‘I want to by buried about ground’

The process is different to home. Catholic cemetery started in 1750, each family has a tomb. The body is placed in a casket and slid into the tomb and bricked up with a name on the plate. With the climate as it is temperatures can reach 120 Fahrenheit which aids decomposition. A year and a day later the casket is slide out, the remains put in a bag and dropped down a hole below the tomb, effectively making the space available infinite.

Some shared/charitable tombs have 2000+ remains.

Decedents of pope Leo are there, plus Nicolas Cage has a pyramid tomb ready for him.

Some are looked after by the families and other in the process of being renovated from the funds of the tours.
